– Bakom namnet Letum finns svensken Mathias Henriksson – en veteran i genren, som albumdebuterade redan 2001. Han är känd för sina brutala ljudbyggen och kraftfulla kompositioner med vilka han låter illustrera själens mörkaste skrymslen. Dreams and Illusions, utgiven på franska Cyclic Law i september, är definitivt inget undantag.

Med varmkalla, sprakande, subtilt aggressiva och hotfulla maskinljud och svepande orkestrala passager skapar han djupt förtätade stämningar gjorda för att tonsätta just dessa mörka skrymslen i själen och tillvaron. Visst, det är mörkt, men här finns gott om skönhet, gott om nyanser och rening. Detta är ett av årets allra bästa album inom dark ambient-genren.

Dreams and illusions, two ethereal concepts that often intermingle in the realm of music, are captured with profound elegance in the form of picturesque imagery. The portrayal of vivid scenes, landscapes, and scenarios can serve as a gateway to the subconscious, allowing listener to traverse the boundaries of reality and dive into the depths of the mind’s creations. Quite often the composer becomes this incredibly special guide to uncover for the listener the landscapes of imagination hidden inside the infinite worlds of illusions created during transcendental journeys. And today it is the turn of Letum, a dark ambient project from Lindesberg, to open wide the gates of sound exploration through the subconscious desires and fears, exploring the human psyche.

Since 2001 Mathias Henriksson aka Letum conjures visions of emotion, thought, and sensation that transcend the boundaries of ordinary existence. His new album “Dreams and Illusions” is presented on Cyclic Law label and exploits the best techniques of extremely cinematic origins blurring the line between reality and illusion. Mathias does not frequently indulge his devoted fans with the new material, sometimes the pauses between his albums are quite long, therefore they are especially valuable and eagerly anticipated with a particular excitement.

With the first sounds of the album, it becomes clear that I hold in my hands something special and sacred. The opening track offers an avenue for exploring the limitless possibilities of dreams and illusions, transporting the listener to worlds where one encounters fantastical realms and surreal experiences. The sound of this composition is very dense, a heavy drilling effect accompanies a quite obscure cyclic melody while a lot of things are happening in the background as well. In the “Boundaries of Consciousness” the composer creates a dynamic interplay between the perception of hypnotic and calm dreaming and the heavy burden of a worst nightmare. These realities can chaotically mix in our dreams, and the author accurately captured the nuances injecting them into the crafty current of the floating background melody, penetrating cold and distorted wave of a creepy sound. These emotional opposites are present in every track, they coexist in a constant balance, dancing in the ecstasy of symbiosis, slowly fading away, and returning with renewed energy.

The atmosphere becomes more symphonic and even solemn as the listener reaches “Out-of-body Experience” composition in which the contrast between the opposite feelings dulls a bit in favor of a broad sense of ambience and wide soundscape of nostalgia and melancholy which can easily capture human imagination while dreaming. With every movement and modulation, the listener uncovers new perspectives in this dense flow of sound and finds a sort of relief in “Thoughts of The Morning Sun to Calm My Heart” composition. A lighter floating melody fills the space of the room covered with soft touches of cracking effects like first rays of light that fall on the floor during the early minutes of dawn.

As soon as the listener reaches “The Roar of Death,” he is being carried by the most hypnotic, very deep, and meditative wave of sound navigating through the boundless expanse of the human spirit. A background hum rises and falls guided by a distant light melody creating an atmosphere of extreme desperation and grief. To finalize this incredible disk, there should have been a solid, monumental track, and Mathias serves it indeed. “This is Farewell” becomes a portal to the last images of a dying soul filling the space with a profound sense of transition injected by a choral singing, perpetuating a poignant and solemn moment with a wide ambience.

Through the alchemy of the album “Dreams and Illusions,” Letum brings life to the ineffable, transforming emotions and ideas into a language that transcends the limitations of words. The sixth in count, this album becomes the most cinematic and conceptual between them, unveiling the full potential of the composer’s imagination and creativity, and allowing listeners to wander through the realms of their own subconscious. In the union of dreams and illusions, music becomes a mirror reflecting the complexity of human experience.

Des entrailles de la terre, s’entendent les bruissements de crissements rampants, hurlements lointains d’enfers noyés sous un déluge d’énergie vorace.

Dreams and Illusions, de l’artiste LẼTUM alias Mathias Henriksson, est un voyage dans un ailleurs entravé aux souffles brûlants parcourant la chair d’êtres réduits au silence. De la noirceur se dégagent des mantras dronesques, circulant à travers les débris de cauchemars morcelés par la peur.

LẼTUM ne laisse passer la lumière, que par de minuscules interstices, glissés entre des lanières de cuir épais. Le calme vole parfois, au secours d’âmes restées en arrière, espoir succinct avant la disparition derrière des parois de terre à la densité brumeuse.

La musique du suédois est une expérience sensorielle avec un au-delà vertigineux, entre-deux abrupte entre la vie et la mort, saut dans un vide gorgé de textures mouvantes et d’apreté soyeuse, où les tensions finissent par se détendre pour exploser sous l’assaut de vagues à l’odeur de sang séché. Шведский dark ambient проект LẼTUM возвращается с новым альбомом Dreams and Illusions. Издателем выступает французский лейбл Cyclic Law.

На музыкальном небосклоне проект Матиаса Хенрикссона появился в 2001 году, когда легендарный лейбл Cold Meat Industry выпустил дебютный альбом LẼTUM. Работа представляла собой классический скандинавский dark ambient и, нужно признать, не особого ажиотажа она вызвала. В то время шведская мутация dark была довольно популярной, поэтому такого рода музыку пытались сочинять многие, как правило без особого успеха. The Entrance To Salvation, дебют проекта, звучал как немного неуклюжий братишка RAISON D’ETRE. В 2006 году у проекта выходит второй альбом – там же, на CMI. С тех пор у Матиаса изданий на лейблах не было, но альбомы выходили – в 2014, 2019 и 2021 годах. Альбомы издавались музыкантом самостоятельно. Год назад Матиас поучаствовал в сборнике лейбла Cryo Chamber, и вот, наконец, полноценная работа на влиятельном лейбле.

Если вы следите за творчеством Матиаса, то наверняка согласитесь с тем, что работы музыканта становятся лучше с каждым новым альбомом, впрочем, как и должно быть. Если первые композиции шведа было уместно сравнивать с RAISON D’ETRE, то со временем Матиас нашел свой собственный путь и свои неповторимые эмоции, создаваемые музыкальным полотном.

Альбом этого года, если сравнивать его с самой первой работой композитора, звучит лаконичней и строже, при этом целостней и гармоничней. Двадцать лет прошло с момента дебюта, это, безусловно, немалый срок. Сегодня Матиас создает довольно холодный минималистичный шведский dark ambient.

Нужно отметить, что пускай за два десятилетия музыка Матиаса стала заметно лаконичней, она ощутимо приобрела в объеме и глубине. Раньше она погружала в атмосферу мрака, но мрака земного, сейчас же это обжигающая холодом тьма глубин космоса, где Земля – лишь крохотный отблеск россыпей небесных алмазов.

Самый красивый трек на альбоме – заключительный, на нем же можно услышать и некое подобие вокала – эдакий торжественный церковный хор, величественный и печальный.

Если подводить итоги, то перед нами, безусловно, один из самых интересных dark ambient альбомов года, с которым мы советуем ознакомиться всем ценителям темной эмбиентной музыки.

Background/Info: Mathias Henriksson strikes back with a new album of Lẽtum. “Dreams And Illusions” is the sixth full length by the Swedish project and the first one released by Cyclic Law.
Content: Henriksson invites the listener to visit dark sound atmospheres which are moving in between pure Dark-Ambient and Cinematic music. Low sound resonations and overwhelming, monstrous, sound treatments create the illusion of an imaginary horror universe from which you can’t escape.
+ + + : Lẽtum remains faithful to its intimate sound universe where you sometimes get the feeling to become the witness of a sacred rite created by the power of music. The tracks sound like sonic collages with a strong visual appeal. The atmosphere supporting the work is menacing which is accentuated by some overwhelming sound blasts. The work is polished by dark strings.
- - - : I no longer experience the same magic as on the early works released on Cold Meat Industry. That was already back in the early millennium years.
Conclusion: Lẽtum remains a true sonic experience for lovers of Dark-Ambient music although there’s no similar climax as in the early years.
